While connections in the brain are made throughout life, the rapid pace at which our brains develop in these first 5 years is never repeated. The term developmental delay describes a child whose skills and abilities in one or more areas are delayed compared with other children of the same age.

A missed milestone could be a sign of a problem, so when you take your child to a well visit, the doctor, nurse, or another specialist might give your child a brief test, or you will complete a questionnaire about your child.
If a child has a developmental delay, it is important to get help as soon as possible. When a developmental delay is not found early, children must wait to get the help they need to do well in social and educational settings.

Birth to 12 Months
Although children who have these experiences clearly are at greater risk for adverse impacts on brain development and later problems with aggression, they are not doomed to poor outcomes.
